Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do I need a financial advisor?
You need an experienced financial advisor for a number of reasons. Here’s a few to start (and why our clients have hired us): (1) You need someone to guide you in identifying your values, goals, and objectives – not only the financial ones – to build a clear roadmap to achieve them and stay the course when “life happens.” Even with a steady source of income or revenue and relatively little debt, a job loss, market crash, or other unforeseen emergency could throw you off track and destroy your sense of financial security. (2) You need someone to simply “get it done” because life has you busy. You’re juggling your personal and family life with your career or running your business, leaving little to no time in the day to plan for yourself or execute on such a plan . . . or even think about it. (3) You need someone to be your watch dog – someone who stays abreast of the never-ending fiscal changes, understands how they may impact you, and objectively comes up with strategies and solutions to maximize opportunities, and of course, steer you clear of costly mistakes.
  • What is the financial planning process?
Financial planning is a multi-step process that provides you with two important things: (1) An in-depth review of your current financial situation, and (2) a blueprint that shows you how to achieve your goals and objectives most efficiently, all the while, staying aligned to your values. But that’s just the beginning. As with any plan, execution is key! Knowing when to alter that plan and pivot is also important. Financial planning is by no means a “one and done.” It is, after all, a process . . . not an event.
  • How does your team work together to serve me?
The key word here is TEAM, and that includes you. By that we mean we work WITH you – not just for you. While we each have our primary roles by which you will know and interact with us, there is much collaboration behind the scenes to ensure all i’s are dotted, t’s crossed, and that no stone is left unturned. Building wealth takes work and comes with an ongoing list of to-dos. It is nearly impossible to get it all done running solo. Thus, we choose to operate as a team, committed to serving you with diligence and the common thread of always doing the right thing.
  • Will you coordinate your advice with my tax situation?
Definitely! With us, this isn’t an option. It’s a must. We believe a sound financial plan should be tailored to your tax situation. While it is important to be diversified in your investments, it is equally, if not more important, to be well tax diversified. There is no cookie-cutter solution here. Thus, we take your specific situation and needs into consideration to customize our advice and strategies to your circumstances.
  • Do you work with other professionals?  If so, how?"
We maintain a close, vetted network of highly experienced and respected professionals who we refer to for their subject matter expertise in associated areas such as taxes, estate planning, family, business, or other legal matters, liability insurance, real estate, financing, etc. These trusted relationships are strictly professional and are not compensated by any fee-sharing arrangements. They are not legally affiliated with Kanno Capital in any way. They are allied by way of trust and because they share our philosophies about how to treat and serve others. We are just as happy to collaborate with your existing go-to's on your behalf.
  • How do you measure success with your clients?
We define success simply by the strength and longevity of the relationship we have with you. It is invaluable and what we love most about what we do. For you, we measure success both monetarily and emotionally: What is your net monetary gain (or loss) year after year? This includes your investment returns as well as your tax savings. Have we saved you time? What have we been able to take on for you so that you can spend more time in other areas of your life? Are you achieving your goals and objectives, and are they being accomplished in the planned timeframe? How do you feel about your money? Do you and your money have a healthy relationship? Are you sleeping well and enjoying the wealth building journey?
  • What do your clients like about working with you?
Our combined knowledge and expertise allow us to be truly comprehensive in our approach. But what makes our approach unique is that we listen, and we get to know you really well – far beyond your dollars. Yes, knowing your facts and figures are critical to us doing our job, but it’s truly knowing and understanding you that ensures our ability to do the best possible job, and as we say, maximize your outcome. So, we can’t help but want to get to know you. We’re also in this for the long haul. We value the building of relationships and the evolution of business relationships into lifelong friendships. Putting your needs first, is never a question. In fact, we sometimes joke that “we care more about our clients’ money than they do.” Of course, we know you care about your money, but we care even more that it serves you in achieving true wealth and your purpose. We are also strong believers in practicing what you preach, and thus, we will never ask something of you that we are not willing to do ourselves. We love what we do. We love serving others. We are all about taking others where they would have not gone by themselves.
  • How often can I expect to hear from you, and when?"
Mostly, this is up to you . . . and what life may present along the way. In general, we like to maintain regular meetings of approximately 2 to 4 times a year. However, the timing of things that happen in life that warrant at least a conversation almost never align perfectly with such pre-scheduled meetings. In such cases, we expect to hear from you! We are willing and able to adjust and accommodate accordingly. In fact, we’ve intentionally set up our calendars with buffer time to allow for the chat, brainstorm, deep dive, or whatever may be necessary to help you tackle things as they pop up. Where you desire meeting less frequently, we will accommodate your request, but ask that we meet no less than annually.
  • Where do you keep my money and how can I see it?
Currently, we custody all actively managed investment accounts at Charles Schwab and SEI Private Trust Company. Both companies offer visibility to accounts through secure online access and through mailed or electronically delivered statements, whichever statement delivery method is preferable by the client. The same visibility and access to all insurance policies and annuity contracts are offered by their respective companies or carriers. In addition, we offer a Dashboard through which you can see everything we manage all in one spot. This Dashboard allows you to add all your other accounts as well – bank accounts, credit cards, loans, self-managed or held-away investment accounts, etc. – so that the Dashboard truly serves as your “one stop.”
  • How are you compensated?
We operate under a hybrid compensation model: Financial Planning – We offer this service on an hourly fee basis or fixed-fee package. Investment Management – We are compensated as a percent of the assets we actively manage for you with breakpoints and fee reductions offered at a household level. Annuities, Disability, Long-term Care, & Life Insurance – We are compensated directly by the company or carrier through a commission determined by them. Commission amounts vary across carriers and by product. We practice transparency and fully disclose our fees and other compensation. We are also happy to thoroughly discuss all pros and cons of our compensation model and help weigh costs vs. benefits.
